The Poughkeepsie Chapter's April coffeehouse began with a few moments of silence for one of the Guild's earliest members, Bruce Morrison, who passed away on April 11.
Immediately following, was a performance of the evening's features, John and Rebekah Martucci with Melissa Holland. John took the stage alone to begin with a song of his own hand dedicated to Bruce. The song was poignant in sentiment and the writing was exquisite. A perfect tribute from one musician to another...
Rebekah and Melissa joined John for "Dream a Little Dream of Me", in the fine Martucci tradition for an old-timey flavor and close harmonies. Melissa's keyboards and flute support, along with her singing, helped to round out the solid performance we are used to hearing from the husband & wife team. The songs they chose thereafter were mostly of John's writing (except for a nicely done, sixties-style call-to-action song written by Rebekah, and her (in French) rendition of "La Vie En Rose"), and the mood of the set, was strong social commentary.
Rebekah's acoustic guitar was supported by John's Paul McCartney-style bass guitar. John chose as his other instrument, a jazz-style electric guitar, leaving the classical instruments at home.
The last song of the evening was enabled by a 1986 recording of Bruce Morrison's performance of "Street Singer's Heaven"...
"When I'm gone, they'll talk about my singing When I'm gone, they'll remember the good old days I'll be in Heaven, with my golden guitar ringing Where there's a crowd on every corner-- And a hat that's full always!"Good-Bye Bruce.
