May Report by Frank CollinA small turnout and an unusually short open mike list surprised Patterson chapter members on a warm May evening. Maybe Uncle Frank's introductory Mother's Day salute wasn't widely enough advertised. Those present were mostly in tears or other forms of discomfort after his tribute to Mothers every-where. Numerous resolutions were made to treat Mom better, to bring her to Patterson next year at the very least.
First to appear on Open Mike was Kevin Becker in his Dogbone from the Yukon persona, rendering "One Too Many Mornings", "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" (this regrettably cut short by equipment difficulties, Dogbone seemingly having hocked the desired harmonica), and "Don't Think Twice". This smooth veteran performer easily surmounted grave technical problems (Dogbone had left his distinctive outfit behind) and was warmly saluted.
Next on stage was Cheryl Rice, reading three of her poems: "Smiling Up From the Bottom", "Common Breath", and "A Break in the Heart". Poetry is uncommon at Patterson, enjoyable poetry even more so, and Cheryl was enthusiastically applauded.
She was succeeded by Denise Finley and her Stealth Guitar. Denise gave us her own instrumental composition, "Moonstone", followed by "Joshua on Barbados" and "Forgotten Blues". Her set was up to her usual high standards and she received Patterson's usual warm tribute not only to a skilled performer but to the Grand Sachem of the Kingston Chapter.
At the last moment Cheryl Rice's colleague Bonnie Richards plucked up her courage and came onstage in a Patterson debut to read three of her own poems: "Veterans", "To Sandy at the Equinox", and "Witch Hazel". Good poetry twice in one evening is decidedly unusual for Patterson and Bonnie was saluted accordingly.
The audience here conducted an onslaught on tonight's imaginative refreshments (including ice cream and brownie sundaes! A Patterson first) provided by Clark and Jo Darling and granddaughters Kim and Kathy.
Mike Rosenthal, tonight's feature performer, followed the interlude with a long and engaging set. Mike is a New Yorker with a long music history compiled in part on the West Coast. He's new in Folk Guild territory but we hope to see and hear more of this good-natured balladeer and his extensive repertory drawn from many different sources. Mike enjoys other people's singing and drew his audience into refrains again and again. Space doesn't permit a recitation of the long list of songs this indefatigable performer gave a delighted Patterson audience.
June Report by Bruce Morrison
It was a hot night in Patterson last June. "How hot was it?" It was so hot that our featured performers, Andy Ferraro and Phil Miller, had to take turns! Our open mic performers included Martin Aronchick, Scott Morrison, Bill & Brandi Hayden, Marc Bernardini, Kevin & Carol Becker with Rich Keyes, Ron Gluck, Barbara Mahon & Amy Robinson, Stuart Kabak and Jean Bratman.
With Bob Stanhope as our featured performer, we begin our 15th season in Patterson. Bob's unique outlook on life and wry sense of humor accompanied witht he 12-string guitar have always given us an enjoyable evening. In October, we are pleased to welcome Denise Jordan Finley & Joe Murray as our featured performers. Their wonderful harmony, fine musicianship and good humor is always in evidence.
As Mario Zecca has stepped down, the position of Patterson Chapter President is open. If you are interested, please call either Bruce Morrison at 845-855-1020 or Frank Collin at 845-279-2504.
