Unbound Reunion Overture Immanent GraceThe Yorktown chapter is up and running with some wonderful talent at our open mikes! We are starting to see local interest and the audience is slowly starting to grow.
Recent feature performers that have captivated our audiences include: Ron Gluck and the “Has-beens” with a new twist on the old (think 1930 and back!); Bob Stanhope - with his unique slant on original folk as well as folk standards; Yorktown Guitar Project - An all acoustic guitar sextet playing intricate instrumental originals; and Denise Jordan Finley playing her wonderful folk originals that move across folk, blues and country music in a seamless fashion.
We are currently looking for more local help for set up and take down – your participation is greatly appreciated.

HVFG Membership Campaign
Midpoint Report
By Kevin BeckerMemberships have been steadily flowing in via the mail and from our events. Even so, we are running somewhat behind last year’s record-setting pace. This is not too surprising given the chapter start-up activities in Yorktown and the mid winter “siesta” at our Friends of Fiddler’s Green chapter. If we were to break last year’s membership record, it would be the 20th consecutive year of membership growth for the Guild.
While it would be nice to be able to boast of two decades of continuous growth, our organization is not about “brow-beating” people into renewing their membership or becoming new members. It is more of a grass roots approach where people join because they simply want to support a community organization that encourages self actualization and live music new and old, as well as professional and amateur.
So please, if you feel what we do is worthwhile, please renew your membership by March 31, as that is when we take our “point in time” measurement. As always, we appreciate your continuing support of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild as it continues to grow and accomplish its (our) goals!

Strategic Opportunity in
Poughkeepsie ChapterIn September of 2005, the Poughkeepsie Chapter under Mike Clarke’s leadership set out in a new direction by starting up a Song Circle at the Unitarian fellowship in Poughkeepsie. The Song Circles have been very successful in providing an added musical dimension to the Guild and we have found that the optimal attendance for these sessions seems to be in the range of 15 to 20 people. So, while the enthusiasm for song circles is strong, and the events are enjoying a high level of success, we are at a crossroads as to how to maintain the financial viability of them, given the fact that on most nights the income is less than the rent for the fellowship hall.
At our last board meeting we discussed a couple of possible solutions. One is for the Guild as a whole to subsidize the song circles. The other solution is for the song circles to move back to the Highland Methodist Church where the rent is more in line with the income. If we were to pick the second option, it might result in ending our 25 year association with the Unitarian Fellowship in Poughkeepsie. That decision should not be made in haste and hence, the reason for this article. An enduring fundamental Folk Guild principle has always been to approach problems as opportunities in disguise.
So what we’d like to do is to solicit ideas from you, our members and friends, on how to best use the space at the Unitarian Fellowship next season if the Song Circle moves to Highland. Our mission is really two-fold. We need your ideas and suggestions for events AND we need to rebuild a strong committee of volunteers to run the chapter activities.
One idea at our board meeting was to re-establish the open mike coffeehouse and another that emerged was to introduce folk dancing as a new event. Others included reaching out to younger people and still another was to do a variety of different events for next season. If you are interested in being involved with and influencing how we utilize our strategic opportunity in Poughkeepsie while at the same time making the song circle stronger, we’d like to hear from you!! Please contact Kevin Becker (or any other board member) at 845-229-0170 or hvfolks@aol.com with your ideas.
Ruminations
As I mentioned in the last newsletter we are happy to list members’ gigs, and events. However, sometimes there is not enough space to give detailed information such as “Eclectic folk group playing guitar, mandolin, violin & spoons with outstanding dynamic lyrics…etc.” Just the facts, please.
We also need to get events pretty far in advance. Our deadline for the May/June issue will be April 10th. This will be the last one until September, so feel free to let us know what you are doing over the summer!
